As men, we are often told to be strong. To be the providers, the protectors, the leaders. We are expected to carry burdens, to shoulder responsibility, and to keep going no matter what. Society tells us that we should always have it together. But how many of us feel the weight of the world pressing down on our shoulders, even when we're trying to be the men we know we should be? The truth is, we are human. And it's in surrendering to Him that we find true peace—peace that goes beyond understanding, peace that heals the soul, and peace that allows us to live fully as the men God created us to be.The Battle We All Face As a man, you may have felt the tension between doing what you believe is right and the stress of constantly fighting to keep everything together. Life feels like a battle. You are juggling responsibilities at work, at home, with friends, and within yourself. The expectations on you never seem to end. And yet, in all of this, the weight you're carrying doesn’t seem to lighten. It doesn’t seem to get any easier, does it?<blockquote>I want you to think about the life of a battle-hardened soldier. After years of fighting, of carrying gear that weighed him down and having to stay on high alert, the idea of retirement sounds almost like a dream; unattainable. Finally, he can take off his armor, let his guard down, and rest. But when he does, his body doesn’t just relax. It doesn't immediately know how to be still. It has become accustomed to being ready for a fight. The armor might come off, but the fight hasn’t ended in his mind, and that heaviness doesn’t go away overnight.</blockquote>This is how many men feel in life. Even when we’re told to rest, we don't know how. We don’t know how to be still. We don’t know how to surrender our worries. And when we try, it often feels like we're failing. We feel like we should be doing more, being more, proving more. But surrendering our stress, our thoughts, and our worries doesn’t come naturally. It feels unnatural, almost impossible. But it’s in those moments, when we let go, that the true peace of God can enter.The Hardest Thing to Do, but the Most PowerfulLet’s be honest: surrendering isn't easy. When you’re used to carrying the load, to being the strong one, to always having a plan and an answer, giving it up feels like weakness. But surrendering isn’t about weakness—it’s about trust. It’s about acknowledging that, in our own strength, we cannot handle it all. When we try to do it all on our own, when we hold on to everything, we only add to our anxiety. There’s a reason why the Bible tells us to cast our cares upon God, because He cares for us; HE CARES FOR YOU! (1 Peter 5:7). God never intended for us to carry the weight of the world. He made us for a purpose, but He also created a way for us to be healed—spiritually, mentally, and even physically. Christ tells us,<blockquote>Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28, ESV)</blockquote>God’s Plan for You is Unique and SpecialDon't take my word for it. Consider this, each of us has a story. A life crafted by God for a purpose. And sometimes, we forget that. We get so caught up in the hustle of life, trying to be everything to everyone, that we lose sight of the truth: God made us for a reason. He designed us with specific talents, passions, and strengths, and He has a plan for our lives—one that brings glory to His kingdom. This isnt the typical I have a good life and I have everything in control kind of moment. This is a simple perspective check that allows vulnerability and transparency from you as a man. Everything that goes against what the world tells a man he should be but then again we dont live for the world and some of us have to come to terms with that.&nbsp;So, just like a soldier who goes into battle with a unique set of skills, you are uniquely equipped for the challenges in your life. God has placed you exactly where you are, in the life stage you’re in, with the experiences you’ve had, to make an impact on the world. Your story, your journey, your struggles—none of it is wasted. It’s all part of the bigger picture that God is weaving together. And it’s through surrendering to Him that you can walk confidently in the plan He has for you, making a change, one generation at a time.A Band of Brothers in Christ As men, we were never meant to walk alone. We are designed for community. God created us to be in relationship with others, to have accountability, and to build each other up. And when we surrender our stresses and worries, it’s often easier to do so in the presence of others who are on the same journey.A man who is alone in his struggle feels isolated. He believes that no one understands, and that no one can help him. But when he opens up, when he shares his struggles with his brothers, he realizes that he is not alone. He isn’t the only one facing hardship. And in this community, he can begin to surrender more freely, knowing that he is supported by others who genuinely care.The Peace That Comes When We Trust The peace that God gives is unlike anything the world offers. It’s not a peace that comes from checking everything off the to-do list or achieving success. It’s not about having everything under control. It’s about trusting that God is in control, even when things seem chaotic. It’s about believing that His plan for us is good and that He is faithful to provide for us, protect us, and guide us.This peace doesn’t come from our own efforts. It comes from surrendering. The lyrics capture the deep struggle of a man fighting through the storm, feeling battered and broken, yet still clinging to hope. Bonus points for any husband who takes a moment to express gratitude for his wife.&nbsp;&nbsp;In 1 Thessalonians 5:18, we are called to “give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” Even in the chaos and challenges, gratitude shifts our perspective from what we lack to what we’ve been blessed with. It’s important to share this with our families—not just in words, but through actions.<h3>Practical Ways to Embrace the Spirit</h3>There are numerous practical ways to embrace the spirit of Christmas and make it a meaningful celebration for both you and your family. As men, we have the power to set the tone for how our homes celebrate Christ’s birth, and this involves living out thankfulness and Christ’s message of love.One great way is to engage in daily reflections or devotionals as a family. In Luke 2:19, it says, “But Mary treasured up all these things and pondered them in her heart.” During the busy season, it’s important to reflect on the significance of Christ’s birth and share that reflection with your loved ones. Can you imagine slowing down long enough that you read over the amazing story of Christs birth in Luke and pondered it in your heart? Reading Scripture, praying together, and discussing the meaning of the season can bring your family closer and help them understand the true heart of Christmas.Another simple but impactful practice is creating a gratitude journal. I like to label this journal as my 'Counted Blessings Journal,' which, much like the stars in the sky, will never fully be counted. Encourage your family to write down moments of thankfulness throughout the season. This helps to center our focus on what truly matters and reminds us of the blessings we experience each day.Finally, instead of focusing on the materialistic aspects of gift-giving, consider a secret gift exchange that emphasizes thoughtfulness and meaning rather than expense. While many aspects of church life focus on spiritual growth, community outreach, and women's ministries, it’s clear that a significant portion of our communities is missing one key ingredient: strong, faith-driven men. The statistic says it all: "When a mother comes to Christ, her family will join her at church only 17% of the time; but when a father comes to Christ, his family joins him 93% of the time." This truth, highlighted by sources like Focus on the Family Publishing and Baptist Press, is a wake-up call for all of us. The reality is that men hold the power to influence their families spiritually like no one else. Yet, for too long, the church has struggled to effectively engage men in the life-changing power of discipleship.At FATE Fellowship, we believe in the power of intentional ministry to men. When a father comes to Christ, his family is far more likely to follow. In fact, studies show that 93% of the time, a father’s faith influences his children to join him at church. However, when a mother comes to Christ, only 17% of the time does her family join her in faith. This shows that men have a unique and powerful role in leading their families spiritually. If it were something we were already doing, we would call it a habit or a normal part of our routine. However, asking and expecting someone to pray, read their Bible regularly, and be accountable to someone else right away can feel unfair. That’s why it’s something we first have to recognize as a need, believe in its importance, and intentionally incorporate it into our daily lives.&nbsp;Now, we need to focus on embracing these disciplines. As I mentioned earlier, they’re things we’re not already doing—usually because they’re not immediately fun or because we haven’t yet seen the benefits of prioritizing them. But these disciplines are intentional actions or habits that align with biblical teachings, and they’re designed to help us deepen our faith and strengthen our relationship with God.Biblical disciplines are not just tasks to complete. They are pathways to transform one's life. It’s a powerful tool that helps us develop self-discipline and learn to rely more fully on God, especially during seasons when we need clarity, renewal, or a fresh sense of direction.&nbsp;But for many, fasting can be misunderstood. Fasting isn’t just about going without food or cutting out distractions for the sake of self-denial. It’s about intentionally setting aside something we normally rely on—whether it’s food, devices, or the busyness of life—in order to seek God more earnestly. It’s a way to step back from the noise and distractions and give God the space to speak to us, reveal His will, and deepen our relationship with Him. I will be honest with you, this is something I dont do enough of and sometimes feel blindsided by when I think of it as an after thought.&nbsp;Again, fasting isn’t just a ritual; it’s an opportunity to become spiritually alert and attuned to God’s voice. The goal is not simply to go without something, but to fill that space with prayer, worship, and reflection, asking God to speak into our lives. When we remove those distractions, we create room for God to reveal areas in our hearts where we need healing, guidance, or strength. Consider how often we face spiritual challenges that seem overwhelming or insurmountable. In these moments, we may feel like the disciples who struggled to cast out the demon in Matthew 17. Despite their efforts, they couldn't overcome the evil spirit. Jesus, however, simply rebuked the demon and healed the boy, and when the disciples asked why they couldn’t do it, He told them, “This kind does not go out except by prayer and fasting” (Matthew 17:21).This is a crucial reminder: some spiritual battles require more than just faith or good intentions. They require focused preparation, through prayer and fasting, to align our hearts with God’s will and to draw on His power. When we fast, we aren’t just giving something up; we’re intentionally setting aside distractions to seek God more deeply, build spiritual strength, and increase our reliance on Him.
